The most commonly reported symptoms of hyperventilation are shortness of breath, numb hands and feet, racing hands, tingling of extremities, chest pains, dizziness, weakness, feelings of being about to faint, and blurred vision.
While there are actual and legitimate causes of hyperventilation such as lung disease or asthma, the majority of causes are simply due to anxiety and/or panic. If you have no prior history or lung disease or asthma, then anxiety is more than likely causing your hyperventilation symptoms here, but get it checked out by your family practitioner to be on the safe side.
Anxiety produced hyperventilation can be extremely terrifying for those who not aware of their anxiety. It can happen because of agoraphobia, work anxiety, hypochondria, or the result of any type of panic attack. In most instances, the sufferer of anxiety subconsciously believes they have little to no control of the bodily functions. They are overly critical with themselves in regards to how they handle the comings and goings in their life. Subconsciously they think, "If I can't control my family or career, maybe I can't even control my breathing, the simplest of body functions!" Truth be told, you are not meant to control breathing (unless diving underwater), it is involuntary so you can focus on life.
This is when they begin to over-think their breathing, which for most people is something they don't think about, being as automatic as it is. Panic starts to set in as they begin to believe in the back of their mind they are not breathing correctly. To compensate, they start breathing deeper and more frequently. This is obviously not a correct breathing method. The added oxygen in their blood combined with the lack of carbon dioxide leads to the hyperventilation symptoms described above, mainly the dizziness and tingling of hands and face.
These hyperventilation symptoms have the effect of a positive feedback mechanism: the person becomes afraid of these symptoms and perceives them as strange bodily sensations, something to be feared. At this point the person begins to believe they are about to have a panic attack. The fight or flight system kicks in. Adrenaline starts to rush through the bloodstream. The person is so afraid at this point, that the panic is confirming their belief of incorrect breathing. They will compensate further by breathing deeper and quicker....etc.
Fortunately, there is a method for anxiety and panic that deals with the causes of anxiety and it's nasty symptoms such as hyperventilation, dizziness, nausea, and stomach aches. There is no need for a person to suffer because of such ridiculous self-talk.
Cardiovascular diseases specially Heart Attacks is rapidly becoming the leading cause of death in the world. It is mostly fatal and debilitating. If a patient survives, he has to endure extensive treatment and different modalities throughout his life.
